Can you mix shimmer mod podge with hard coat mod podge?
I;m Planning on Decoupaging my coffee and end tables before I move into my new apt. I love retro designs and found the perfect fabric! I would love to top off this design with a cute silvery shimmer..however I have a huge family and they come to visit often. We’re kind destructive and I know hard coat is my best bet. Any suggestions?
You can probably mix them together**, but you’ll get a tougher coat by using the ModPodge with Shimmer first until it’s the look you want, then using one or more coats of the Hard Coat ModPodge on top.

Instead of the Hard Coat though, you could just use a clear polyurethane, which is very tough after drying (buy that at a hardware store in the aisle for sealing bare wood…you’d probably want a water-based Gloss version of the finish –Varathane is a good brand).
Hard Coat ModPodge is probably just more resistant to later moisture than regular ModPodge (and also Shimmer ModPodge), and probably similar to another product they now manufacture called Royal Coat which is a premade decoupage medium that’s tougher than regular ModPodge.
None of the white-glue based mediums used for decoupage won’t be quite as hard or resistant to moisture as polyurethanes would.)
Since the “shimmer” is probably just a mica powder (like Pearl Ex) mixed into regular ModPodge, you could also do that yourself by mixing mica powder into the polyurethane, or even into regular ModPodge or hard coat ModPodge, or into decoupage medium you make yourself (Elmers GlueAll mixed about 3 or 4 to 1 with water).
